UK proposes updates to crane, lifting-attachment and machinery safety standards

A new UK proposal to amend designated machinery standards includes references relevant to tower cranes, non-fixed lifting attachments, crane hooks and industrial trucks. The scheduled notice date is 26 November 2026.

Machinery standards proposal published

The Office for Product Safety and Standards updated its designated-standards proposals on 28 October 2026 with a Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations proposal to amend. The notice is scheduled for publication on 26 November 2026, subject to the designation process.

The proposal includes standards relevant to lifting machinery and components, including tower cranes, non-fixed load-lifting attachments, crane hooks and industrial trucks.

What designated standards mean

This is a proposal concerning standards businesses may use to demonstrate conformity with essential requirements under relevant GB product-safety law. It is not a replacement for operational duties under LOLER or PUWER.

  • Use current manufacturer information and documentation for the exact equipment.
  • Check that lifting attachments and components are correctly specified and compatible.
  • Keep product conformity and site lifting-operation duties distinct.
  • Monitor the proposal through to the scheduled November notice.
  • Update technical libraries when standards and manufacturer documentation change.

OEM documents, equipment records and technical references should remain version-controlled so lift planners can demonstrate which information supported the assessment.
