CITB confirms new Appointed Person plant training standard

CITB has confirmed the next phase of its standardised plant training programme, including a new Appointed Person standard and new tower-crane operator standards.

New standards for lifting roles

CITB and the Plant Sector Representative Organisation are continuing the fourth phase of new plant training standards intended to improve consistency and work-ready competence across construction.

The remaining phase-four standards include Appointed Person and tower-crane operator categories, with CITB confirming an October 2026 launch for those standards.

What lifting businesses should do

Employers and lifting teams should review the final standards against their existing competence matrices, training arrangements and role-verification processes once launched.

  • Review AP competence and training records.
  • Check company competence matrices against the new standard.
  • Ensure appointment remains based on competence for the lifting operation, not a card or certificate alone.
  • Keep training evidence accessible within project records.
