Static Lifting Plans

Static lifting often involves chain blocks, beams, gantries, proprietary systems, temporary works frames or controlled plant-room moves. The risk is not always the size of the load; it is whether the support, fixing, lifting accessory and load path have been properly verified.

Standards and Planning Basis

Static lifting should be planned under LOLER and PUWER with suitable temporary works, structural or engineering checks where loads are transferred into beams, slabs, frames, props, lifting eyes, proprietary systems or existing structures.

  • AHUs, pumps, electrical panels and MEP plant
  • Steel beams, plates, frames and plant-room equipment
  • Needles, grillage beams, props and temporary works equipment

Planning Considerations

  • Temporary works: identify whether the lifting beam, support, prop, anchor, frame, slab or existing steelwork needs design approval
  • Ground/support: confirm the load path from lifting point through to final bearing surface, including floors, slabs, platforms and access routes
  • OHLE/GS6: usually less common for indoor static lifting, but still consider overhead live services, busbars, cable trays and electrical isolation
  • A61/AP control: define who has planned the lift, who has checked the support, and what changes trigger re-approval

Key Checks

  • Verify supporting structure, fixing method and lifting points
  • Confirm accessory WLL, sling angles, chain block capacity and load path
  • Assess manual handling, trapped services, restricted access and pinch points
  • Capture TWC, engineer or competent reviewer sign-off where required
